Increased Patrols Throughout The North Bay This Holiday Weekend

Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start to summer, is often celebrated with barbecues, family picnics and outdoor parties. Those partaking in these festivities should do so wisely, as many cities throughout the state of California are increasing their drunk driving enforcement efforts in an attempt to reduce the risk of accidents.
Sonoma and Marin Counties are a few of the cities increasing their DUI patrols during the holiday weekend. Extra officers will be patrolling the roadways and additional checkpoints will likely be set up in these areas. Checkpoints or sobriety stops are used to randomly stop motorists and observe their behavior.

If the officer running the stop suspects the driver’s ability to operate his or her vehicle is impaired due to the use of drugs or alcohol, additional steps may be taken. These steps could include requesting a breath sample for a Breathalyzer test or conducting a field sobriety test.
Based on the information gathered from either the Breathalyzer test or field sobriety test, charges may be issued. DUI charges in California are harsh and can come with imprisonment, hefty fines and a driver’s license suspension.
If you are charged with a DUI in California, it is important to take the charges seriously before they become a conviction. Convictions can lead to criminal records, which may need to be disclosed on applications for employment and housing. This could make it even more difficult to find a job or place to live in an already difficult market.
